The Galapagos Islands is an archipelago created by volcanic eruptions around 10 million years ago.  It is found 600 miles off the coast of mainland Ecuador. The 19 islands, combined with dozens of other islets, have a total land area of 3,086 square miles and are spread over an area of sea covering some 20,000 square miles. These islands became a unique habitat to many species, which flew or drifted there by currents. It was here that, in 1831, Charles Darwin performed his famous studies which revolutionized the principles of human evolution and changed the face of biological history forever.  Few other places on earth can lay claim to having such an important influence on science or human development.

Today, the islands are a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site and are home to a wealth of protected wildlife and fascinating volcanic landscapes. The Galapagos Islands have species which are endemic to the islands, such as the Darwin finche, the Galapagos peguin and theGalapagos giant tortoise, amongst others. They also have an incredible mix of polar and tropical species, from penguins and fur seals to flamingos and tropical fish. The Galapagos are a unique destination where you become accustomed to being surprised. Nothing quite compares to the joy of observing animals in the wild, or the sense of wonder and privilege felt while spending time with animals who don’t run or fly away when humans approach, truly unique treasures of our earth. Setting foot on barren coasts of fresh black lava frozen in its descent to the shoreline, you’ll see why early explorers likened the islands to an inferno on earth. However, you’ll quickly come to appreciate each island as a little “world unto itself” with its own distinctive character, terrain, climate, and wildlife. (info Galapagos Diving)
